Speeding

If killing yourself or someone else in a speeding accident sounds unlikely to you, then consider this. You can also kill your licence to drive.

Speeding is the number-one killer on our roads and Traffic Police is determined to arrest it. Before you speed, remember how hard you worked to get your licence. And how hard you will have to work to get it back.

TRAFFIC POLICE ACTIONS

All across Singapore Traffic Police are gearing up to get speedsters off our roads, employing some of the most advanced technology in the world. Traffic Police Department have mobilised 24-hour patrols, with new, mobile stealth laser cameras. These can be quickly positioned in any location, at any time. The new cameras can photograph two cars per second, and can capture not only your number plate, but your face as well.

So now your chances of being caught speeding are greater than ever. Unless your car can travel faster than a laser beam, Traffic Police suggest you slow down. When you speed, things happen in the blink of an eye. The faster you go, the longer the distance required for your vehicle to come to a halt, and the less time you have to react to potential danger. And, the faster you speed, the less control you have over your vehicle.

You might be surprised at just how much impact a speeding vehicle can cause. The greater your collision speed, the greater the severity of injury, or even chances of death.

With the implementation of the new Driver Improvement Points System (DIPs), Traffic Police is getting tougher on speedsters. It only takes one or two speeding offences to put licence in jeopardy. You worked hard for the right to drive. Don’t blow it by speeding.

Most Common Causes

Most accidents at road junctions occur when motorists pick up speed to cross the junction before the traffic light changes to red. This is extremely dangerous due to several reasons:

  • The light could change to red before the motorist has passed the junction. Such a situation leaves him little time to stop and often results in an accident.
  • The faster your speed, the more distance is required for you to stop. At 50km/h, a vehicle travels 32m before coming to a complete halt. It means that, even if you were to hit your brakes immediately after spotting an obstacle, you would hit whatever AND WHEREVER was within that distance of you!
  • The faster your speed, the greater the impact upon collision. Speeding not only increases the chances of you getting into an accident, but it also dramatically increases the likelihood of you sustaining serious injuries or even death.

Another common cause of accidents at road junctions is the motorist's lack of concentration.

To avoid being in such a situation, make sure you have sufficient rest before each road trip. This helps to keep you aware of all that is happening on the road and gives you more time to react to foreseen events. Also avoid talking on your handphone while driving. It only divides your attention between the conversation and the road.
